How to stay for free in more than 500 B&Bs around the worldNovember 21, 2018
Would you like to travel to Malaysia, Vienna or Barcelona but your budget is not enough for accommodation? Would you like to spend a few days by the sea in the Greek islands without spending a single euro in hotels or apartments? Although by simple logic you could believe that it is rhetorical questions – who would not be willing to? -, the truth is that now it is possible to do so. How? With a formula as simple and old as barter.
The exchange of products and services has existed since the beginning of time: you want something that I have and I need something that is in your hands. The solution seems to us to be the simplest: to exchange one thing for another. For centuries, with money as an instrument of change, barter went into the background, although in no case disappeared. Today it is imposed as a rising option also in terms of travel.
For ten years, in Italy, the Bed and Breakfast portal organizes the “Settimana del Baratto”, an initiative that allows you to stay in hundreds of Bed & Breakfast all over the country thanks to bartering. The success was such that led its promoters to launch this year at international level the “Barter Week” or Barter Week.
Until November 25, travelers can access more than 500 accommodations from 62 countries around the world, in exchange for goods or services -such as manual, creative or didactic activities, or a personal good-, without mediating money. In some establishments, the overnight stays are not limited to this week, but rather their owners accept exchanges at other times of the year.
The dynamic is simple: The list of participating B & Bs is published on the Barter Week website. of the present edition. The description of each of them is accompanied by the wish list of their owners, that is, what they are willing to offer to the guests and what they expect to receive in return. Those interested in any of the accommodations should simply write a message and agree on the exchange.
Let’s go back to the questions we asked you at the beginning of this article: Would you like to travel to Malaysia, Vienna or Barcelona but your budget is not enough for accommodation? The next question should be: are you social media? And is that Aziz, the owner of Amethyst Love Guesthouse offers room in Kuala Lumpur -the capital Malaysia- to those who can help by boosting their Instagram accounts and Facebook. Víctor and Olga, on the other hand, promoters of a property in Vienna and one in Barcelona, respectively, are willing to exchange apartments for each other in another big city.
The next question was: Would you like to spend a few days by the sea in the Greek islands without spending a single euro on hotels or apartments? If so, you’re in luck, since Julie wants to receive travelers at her guest house in the town of Rethimno, on the island of Crete, in exchange for a week-long couple’s holiday in Sicily.
Christian also says he wants to house three people in the Pensao Francisca, his B & B of the Azores: a carpentry expert who can help him build a small greenhouse, a gardener to help him in the pruning of the trees, and a web designer who creates your new web page.
All of them are just a small sample of the possibilities offered by Barter Week.
